South Africa is set to acquire cleaner and more
environmentally friendly fuel that should be available from July 2017. New
petroleum regulations that require oil companies to introduce ‘Euro 5’ fuel in
South Africa has been gazetted by the minister of energy.
South Africa currently uses ‘Euro 2’ fuel that is not as
‘clean’ as ‘Euro 5’ fuel. The use of ‘Euro 2’ fuel has meant that certain
engines have not been able to be sold in South Africa. More than this, ‘Euro 5’
fuel will reduce harmful emissions and reduce greenhouse gases.
National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA
(Naamsa) believes that the move “will enable vehicle manufacturers to market
high technology, highly fuel efficient and low emission new cars in
South Africa.”
Although refineries will have to upgrade facilities, it’s
not yet clear how these costs are to be recouped. There is a possibility of
higher fuel prices but that is unfortunately a given, regardless.
