The widely used Toyota Ses’fikile taxi that helps transport 9
million South Africans everyday is now locally made at Toyota’s production
plant in Prospecton, Durban. The new production line represents an investment of R70
million which has in turn created 90 new jobs in the start-up phase and 210
jobs in the supply and service provider chain.
“Not only is the Ses’fikile an important cog in the national
taxi industry, but it is also a major volume seller for Toyota in South Africa.
With this in mind it makes economic sense to localise the assembly of this
product and reap the benefits of increased investment, job creation and
possible downstream supplier development,” says Dr Johan Van Zyl, President and
CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and a Managing Officer of Toyota Motor
Corporation (TMC).
When the first phase is complete, Toyota will deliver up to
15 000 Ses’fikile taxi’s to the Southern African market. Initial volumes
stand at 10 000 units per year.
