Having your car stolen is one of the most frustrating crimes
motorists have to face up to in South Africa. Thousands upon thousands of cars
are stolen across the country every year. In 2010/2011, the SAPS reported
64 504 cars and motorcycles stolen in South Africa. That number more than
doubles to 123 091 cases of car related theft, or possessions stolen from
motor vehicles in the same period.
The events leading up to a car being stolen vary greatly
depending on many factors and often the actions of motorists may be a
significant contributing factor. That said, motorists play a pivotal role in
the prevention of car theft. Through common sense actions, motorists can avoid
or at least minimise the risk of theft occurring. General awareness of your
surroundings may help avoid car theft or reduce the risk. Simple things like
locking your car or keeping valuables out of sight and installing anti-theft
devices in your car can help prevent your car being stolen.
