The Mercury Newspaper has reported that the number of
hijackings has increased up to 35% in the last two years in KwaZulu Natal.
Hijacking hotspots included Umlazi, Chatsworth, Bluff, Phoenix, Berea, Umbilo,
Greenwood Park, Amanzimtoti, Pinetown, Empangeni and KwaDukuza. Motorists are
urged to exercise caution when driving in these areas and be on the look out
for any suspicious individuals or vehicles. Motorists are also urged to report
any suspicious individuals or cars to the nearest Police station.
Managing Director, Craig Taylor, of BidTrack vehicle
tracking and recovery has said that company statistics reveal a 21% increase in
hijackings in KwaZulu Natal in 2012.
Taylor also alluded to the fact that hijackers often
followed victims to their homes or patrolled residential areas for ‘ordered
vehicles’. Tracker spokesman Gareth Crocker has said that 60%-70% of all
hijackings occurred in business or domestic driveways. Truck hijacking had also
become a common occurrence, with the Hyundai H100 being high on the hijacking ‘wanted’
list.
