Korean auto manufacturer Kia is taking progressive steps to
challenge luxury European brands with its newest flagship sedan, the K9, which
is currently on sale in South Korea.
The rear-wheel drive Kia K9 is not small either, with similar
dimensions to the BMW 7-Series, it stands at 5.09m in length and 1.9m wide,
riding on a 3m wheelbase. Kia has also packed the K9 with features such as
adaptive LED-only headlights, blind-spot detection system, all-round view
monitor with four cameras and a 17-speaker Harman audio system.
This is what Kia’s chief design officer, Peter Schreyer had
to say about the K9, “K9 is a clear signal of our intention and determination
to compete head-to-head with the European luxury brands”.
The K9 is currently powered by a 3.8 litre V6 engine capable
of 213kW and a 246kW direct injection 3.8 litre engine is expected to join the
range next year. Will the Kia K9 grace
South African roads? At this point Kia South Africa have not made any promises
but have said that “We are looking into it”, at least. In the meantime, South
Africans can feast on the new Kia Rio sedan now available in South Africa.
