Maria De Villota loses right eye after crash

Formula One test driver Maria De Villota of Marussia, who was involved in an accident on Tuesday during a testing session at Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire, UK, has unfortunately lost her right eye as a result of her injuries.

The 32-year-old Spaniard experienced severe trauma to her head and face after colliding into a support vehicle. De Villota was apparently unconscious for about 15 minutes and paramedics took up to an hour to remove her from the accident scene. She was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital with life threatening injuries and underwent extensive surgery.

Reports indicate that the F1 car she was testing suddenly accelerated into the support vehicle, with her head taking most of the impact of the collision. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. Watch the news report below for more details.
