The Fresh Hyundai i20 in South Africa

Aimed to appeal to a new, younger group of car buyers, the new Hyundai i20 has been launched in South Africa. The i20 has undergone some styling revision in line with Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language and also boasts an upgrade in standard equipment which buyers will come to appreciate.

The new i20 is offered in three derivatives, the i20 Fluid (6-speed manual), the i20 Glide (6-speed manual) and the i20 Fluid automatic (4-speed automatic), all of which are fitted with a 1.4-litre petrol engine that develops 73kW at 5 500rpm with a maximum torque figure of 136Nm at 4 200rpm. With the help of Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), the new i20 is a frugal fuel sipper and in manual guise, displays a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 4.2-litres/100km. For the automatic variant, fuel consumption goes up marginally to 4.8-litres/100km. CO2 emissions for the i20 is equally impressive with 132g/km for the manual and 140g/km for the automatic.

Don’t expect to break any land speed records in the i20 but it’s nifty enough to get you where you need to be within the speed limits. The manual i20 will reach a top speed of 181km/h while the automatic claims 170km/h. Acceleration to 100km/h is in the region of 11.6 seconds for the manual i20 while the automatic will take 12.9 seconds.

In terms of styling, the new i20 features the ‘fluidic sculpture’ hexagonal-shaped grille along with revised bumpers, fender and bonnet. Integrated fog-lights and new headlamps further enhance the i20’s new look. The rear tail lights have also been restyled and the revised rear bumper now incorporates a rear park assist system as standard.

New materials have been used on the inside and i20 now displays more sophisticated switchgear as well as black, high-gloss inserts on the dashboard with a soft-touch finish. Overall the i20 is more spacious than the outgoing model, which is always a good thing. The new i20 is fitted with a Radio/CD/MP3 player with USB, Auxiliary, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.

For an entry level car, the i20 seems to be well equipped and it will be interesting to see how the new i20 is received by the local South African market. It certainly looks like a pleasant car to drive and has the looks to back it up.

The Prices for the Hyundai i20 are as follows,
