Alcohol Limit to be reduced in South Africa

Drunk driving is a major problem in South Africa and contributes significantly to deaths on our roads. In a step to clamp down on the issue, proposed amendments to the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill may see the legal blood alcohol level drop from the current 0.05g/100ml to 0.02g/100ml.

In the real world this means that any person planning on driving may not even consume 340ml of beer before doing so. 0.02g/100ml is equivalent to 25ml of Vodka or brandy or 75ml of wine according to Gary Ronald from the Automobile Association (AA), who is in favour of the amendment.

The public has until 18 August 2012 to comment on the amendment bill.
