Should you test drive a car?

So you itching to buy a new car and you can’t wait to get your hands on that car that’s been keeping you up at night. What should you do? Well, you should arrange for a test drive. Call the dealership and ask them if you can test drive the car, simple. If you are planning on buying a used car, the same rule applies, ask for a test drive, always.

The Detroit Free Press reports that more than 10% of new car buyers don’t test drive the car before buying it. Now it makes me wonder what the situation is in South Africa, but my gut tells me that the percentage could be much higher, but I could be wrong.

A study conducted by Maritz Research surveyed over 80 000 people in the US who had bought 2012 model year vehicles and those who didn’t take a test drive totalled 11.4%. So why is test driving so important? Test driving a car that you plan on buying is something every responsible car buyer should do. More than this, car buyers should test drive as many different makes and models as possible to get a good idea of what is available in the market and for what price. Doing this will make you an educated buyer and you will hopefully go on to purchase a car that is best suited to you and your needs.

Buying a car without test driving it first is possibly one of the worst car buying decisions anyone can make. At the end of the day, cars don’t come cheap and you should therefore do extensive research before buying a car in order to make the best choice possible. A car may look good on paper but the proof is in the pudding and it’s in your best interest to arrange a test drive.
