A new London ‘black cab’ taxi is on the cards and Nissan has
stepped up to provide the solution with the NV200 London Taxi that will help
transport 300 000 daily users. The Nissan NV200 taxi also seeks to drastically reduce CO2
emissions in the British capital while offering a reliable and fuel efficient alternative.
The NV200 London Taxi is based on Nissan’s multi-purpose
NV200 compact van which was introduced in 2009 and has sold over 100 000
units in 40 countries worldwide. The NV200 London Taxi seats five adults with
three on the rear bench and two passengers on rear facing fold-down seats while
the front passenger seat has been removed to store luggage. The taxi also has
sliding doors which are much easier to use than conventional doors and don’t
pose a threat to other road users when opened.
The NV200 is fitted with a 1.5-litre dCi HP EuroV turbo
diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission that puts out 81kW with a
frugal fuel consumption figure of 5.3-litres/100km and a CO2 emissions figure
of 139g/km, which is almost a 50% saving over the current taxi, the TX4. An
all-electric e-NV200 concept will also undergo testing in London in 2013.
This all falls in line with the Mayor of London, Boris
Johnson’s, plans to improve air quality in the city, “Improving Air Quality in
London is one of the most important challenges I face as Mayor. Having taken
the significant step of introducing the first age limit for taxis in London, I
am absolutely delighted that Nissan has taken up the gauntlet and responded to
the challenge I set in my Air Quality Strategy to reduce taxi emissions and
improve efficiency”. The Nissan NV200 aims to receive full London Taxi
certification this year, and if all goes well, Londoners will be cruising
around in style.
