Union federation Cosatu has called on its two million
members to unite and participate in a nationwide protest against the e-tolling
system in Gauteng. The Gauteng e-tolls are to be implemented on April 30 2012
despite widespread public outcry against the system.
Apart from its membership, Cosatu believes many more angry motorists and residents will join the nationwide protests to take place from April 23 2012. Cosatu is planning several rallies, marches and demonstrations at the offices of SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) and transport departments around the country which could very well lead to a national stay-away or socio-economic strike on 30 April 2012.
Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said that opposition to the e-tolls was “overwhelming” especially with the new punitive rates released over the last week.
Unregistered motorists will be paying R1.75 / km compared to the 30c / km paid by registered motorists. The e-toll saga continues…
