Toyota Yaris Hybrid available in South Africa

Good news for green motorists in South Africa who are keen to lend the environment a helping hand is that the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid is now available. Boasting a low fuel consumption of only 3.8-litres/100km on the combined cycle and a CO2 emissions figure of only 88g/km, the Yaris Hybrid is the most environmentally friendly car on sale in South Africa.

The Yaris Hybrid is fitted with a 55kW 1.5-litre petrol unit that is mated to a 45kW electric motor to produce a total output of 74kW. This translates into 11.8 seconds to reach 100km/h while going on to reach a top speed of 165km/h. Two models are available namely the XS and the XT, both of which making use of CVT constantly variable transmission.

The XS model includes four airbags, ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, six-speaker touch screen sound system with Blutooth, ‘Eco’ functions, remote central locking and a multi-functional steering wheel.  The XR model adds two additional speakers along with cruise control, auto headlights and windscreen wipers, partial leather trim, push-button engine start and electric rear windows and an additional three airbags.

The price for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid XS is R223 800 while the Toyota Yaris XR will go for R245 900.

Aspid GT-21 Invictus Spanish Supercar

The Aspid GT-21 Invictus is the second design to come from the Spanish carmaker with its first being the 2008 SS. The GT-21 Invictus comes with some serious clout in the form of a 330kW 4.4-litre BMW V8 that mates with either a seven-speed dual clutch transmission or a six-speed manual.

This powerful engine allows the Invictus to achieve 0-100km/h in less than three seconds with a top speed of over 300km/h. Matching its formidable power is its lightweight frame made mostly of aluminium and composites on a carbon-fibre monocoque that weighs only 80kg. The whole car weighs less than a tonne, so you can imagine what this beast is capable of on the road.

The GT-21 Invictus has some impressive styling too with sharp contours and detailing and offers 2+2 seating along with a 275-litre boot. With more than 100 options on offer, no two will be identical. Parent company IFR Automotive plans 250 a year starting in 2014 and each one will be built to order by a dedicated crew as opposed to on a production line. Customers will also have the opportunity to witness their car being built at the factory.

The iconic Ford Transit will be heading to South Africa early in 2013 along with the Ford Tourneo Custom. The first Ford Transit van was launched way back in 1965 and over six-million units have been sold across the globe, so this is a special van. Check out the interesting two-part video below, featuring BBC Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond as he documents racing driver Sabine Schmitz taking a Ford Transit around the world-famous Nurburgring in under ten minutes.

Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom coming to SA

Ford will enter the mini bus and large panel van segment in South Africa with the all-new Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom which will be made available in the first quarter of 2013.

Both models feature bold exterior design features and luxury driver-orientated cockpits and will be available as both short and long wheelbase versions. The Tourneo Custom offers seating for 8 passengers along with a highly versatile seating configuration with up to 30 different arrangements depending how you choose to stow and fold the seats.

Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine will be used for both models. The transit Custom and Tourneo Custom will be built at the Ford Otosan Plant in Kocaeli, Turkey. Keep your eyes peeled for more details closer to launch.

Preventing Car Theft

Having your car stolen is one of the most frustrating crimes motorists have to face up to in South Africa. Thousands upon thousands of cars are stolen across the country every year. In 2010/2011, the SAPS reported 64 504 cars and motorcycles stolen in South Africa. That number more than doubles to 123 091 cases of car related theft, or possessions stolen from motor vehicles in the same period.

The events leading up to a car being stolen vary greatly depending on many factors and often the actions of motorists may be a significant contributing factor. That said, motorists play a pivotal role in the prevention of car theft. Through common sense actions, motorists can avoid or at least minimise the risk of theft occurring. General awareness of your surroundings may help avoid car theft or reduce the risk. Simple things like locking your car or keeping valuables out of sight and installing anti-theft devices in your car can help prevent your car being stolen.
