South African Vehicle Sales for August 2012

The South African vehicle industry continued to show signs of growth in the month of August 2012. Naamsa reported that overall vehicle sales increased by 9.4% when compared with the same period last year. Sales totalled 56 253 units compared to the 51 409 units sold in 2011.

The first eight months of 2012 reflected an 11.3% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. In August, dealership sales accounted for 81% of sales while the rental industry accounted for 11.5% of sales. Corporate fleets accounted for 3.9% of sales and government claimed 3.5%.

Low interest rates and improving demand for credit by households and businesses continued to support domestic sales. Naamsa however predicts a less promising outcome for 2013. “Looking ahead to 2013, increasing inflationary pressures on the back of expected higher fuel and food prices and the impact of rand weakness on new vehicle pricing were likely to result in a more difficult trading environment and more subdued growth in vehicle sales,” Naamsa said.

The top three selling vehicles for the month of August 2012 include the VW Polo Vivo in first place with 3 714 sales. The Toyota Hilux claims second place with 2 942 units sold while the VW Polo sits pretty in third place with 2 355 units in the bag. The top selling vehicle list excludes sales by Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and Kia.

South African Vehicle Sales July 2012

The South African vehicle market continues to show signs of growth with a reported 18.34% increase in sales for the month of July 2012 when compared to the same period last year.

Naamsa reports that a total of 54 067 vehicles were sold in the month of July 2012 with a 4.22% increase on the month of June 2012. However, sales MCVs, buses and trucks experienced a dip of 4.9%.

Low interest rates, a competitive trading environment and an improved demand for credit by households continue to drive growth in the South African vehicle market. Naamsa believes that the market will achieve 10% growth for 2012.

Top selling vehicles in South Africa for July 2012 include the ever popular Volkswagen Polo Vivo in first position with 3 449 units sold. The Toyota Hilux takes second place with 2 781 units while the new Volkswagen Polo claims third place with 2 459 units in the bag. Further down the list, the Toyota Etios is in fourth with 1 747 units sold and the Chevrolet Utility in fifth place with 1 747 units sold.

South African Vehicle Sales June 2012

Naamsa has released figures for vehicle sales in South Africa for the month of June 2012 and the results seem promising. Naamsa reports a 15.6% improvement on the same period last year. Sales for the month of June 2012 totalled 51 891 units while export sales rose by 7% or 1767 units.

In the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment, sales rose by 2425 units or 22.1% with sales totalling 13421 units compared to the 10 966 sales recorded in June last year.

New model introductions, low interest rates and vehicle affordability continue to support the South African car market. The Toyota Hilux was the best selling vehicle for the month of June 2012 with 3067 units sold. In the passenger vehicle segment, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo came out on top again with 2633 units sold.

Toyota Hilux and VW Polo Vivo Top Sellers in SA

The South African car market seems to be gaining strength with April’s figures indicating a 10.5% year-on-year rise. Naamsa reckons car sales rose to 42 617 units compared to 38 583 sales recorded in April 2011. This figure is less than the 56 152 units sold in March 2012.

Although export figures have dropped by 11% due to economic woes overseas, the local South African car market remains positive. Naamsa believes that the overall improvement can be attributed to more consumers being able to afford vehicles coupled with reasonably low interest rates.

The top three sellers for the month of April are in first place, the Toyota Hilux with a total sales figure 2741. In close second, with a sales figure of 2256 is the Volkswagen VW Polo Vivo which will surely continue to rack the sales going forward. In third place, with 1766 sales in April, is the Volkswagen Polo. Well done to Volkswagen. What’s also interesting is that Kia is holding its sales figures close to its chest and one can only wonder how well they are doing, especially with the addition of the new Kia Rio sedan that is bound to sell like hot cakes. Time will tell, the truth will be revealed…
