Opel ADAM unveiled

Opel’s funky urban car known as ADAM will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September this year and will be initially offered in three petrol variants with highly customisable trim options available to sweeten the package.

The trim options are available in three “moods or worlds” which include JAM which is colourful and fashionable, GLAM which is elegant and refined and lastly SLAM which is sporty and energetic. All three trim options are available in a variety of colour and décor combinations to suit personal taste.

In terms of engine power, three petrol engines will be available and these include a 51kW/70hp 1.2-litre unit, 64kW/87hp 1.4-litre unit and a 74kW/100hp 1.4-litre unit. All these variants will make use of a five-speed manual transmission. All the powertrains include Opel’s Ecoflex pack which includes Start/Stop technology.  A turbocharged unit with direct injection and a six-speed manual transmission will be available at a later stage.  

The interior has room for four even though ADAM is only 3.7 meters in length. The infotainment system is able to integrate with a smartphone and displays chosen content on a 7-inch full colour touch screen. The ADAM also comes with Bluetooth and USB connectivity for other devices such as MP3 players, iPods and tablets. Customers have a choice of between 15” and 18” rims.

From the looks of it, the Opel ADAM is set to do well following its launch at the Paris Motor Show but there are no current plans for the ADAM to be introduced into the South African car market. I think the ADAM will do well in South Africa, what do you think?

Opel Astra gets boot

Opel have gone ahead and developed a Astra sedan taking inspiration from the Astra hatchback. GMSA is still pondering whether to bring the Astra sedan to South Africa.

The Opel Astra sedan is 239mm longer than its five-door Astra hatchback sibling with a total boot space of 460 litres. This capacity is increased to 1010 litres when the seats are folded down.

In Europe, petrol engines vary from a 1.4 litre naturally aspirated engine offering 74kW and a 132kW 1.6 turbo engine. It’s expected that in 2013 a direct injection 1.6 turbopetrol engine will be added to the range. Diesel heads have the choice of three 1.7 litre engines ranging between 70kW and 96kW.

The Astra sedan also makes use of the hatch’s Advanced Forward Lighting System with variable light distribution, FlexRide chassis system and various infotainment offerings. One can only wonder if the Opel Astra sedan will ever see a South African sunrise and if it would do well in an already competitive sedan market.

New Opel Meriva available in South Africa

Tweet Opel fans can happily applaud the arrival of the all new Opel Meriva to South Africa. Combining elements of flexibility and practicality, the new Opel Meriva makes a bold statement in the Multi Purpose Vehicle segment, building on the success of the previous model.

Space and practicality define vehicles in this particular segment and the 5-seater Opel Meriva has hit the nail on the head. Access to the cabin is made easy with the innovative FlexDoors, a rear hinge rear door system that dramatically increases access with the doors opening to 84 degrees. The seating arrangement in the cabin can also be easily changed with the help of the Meriva’s FlexSpace technology. The Meriva also features more storage space with up to 32, easy access storage compartments. Furthermore, the interior boasts superb styling that oozes with class and elegance.

The new Opel Meriva has a 15mm longer wheelbase, 39mm wider front and 45mm wider rear tracks, all contributing to a significantly smoother ride. The engine room is powered by 1.4 litre turbo-charged petrol engine with a max power output of 103 kW coupled with a six-speed manual transmission gearbox. The Meriva sprints to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds reaching a top speed of 197 km/h. Fuel consumption for the Meriva sits at 6.7 litres/100km.  

The Opel Meriva is available in two models, the Enjoy and the Cosmos. The big advantage of the Opel Meriva is the affordability factor with The Enjoy going for R 234 000 and the Cosmos selling at R 254 000, a nice price for a nice car.
